Firewire gets Upgrade
Scrolling through the Mac Buyers Guide at Macrumors.com (great place to make sure you buy on the beginning of the cycle - hattip: Colin Hurd circa 2001 - I cam across this article from Jeff Longo:
IEEE has approved a new version of IEEE 1394, better known to Apple users as Firewire. The standard, known as 1394-2008, encompasses all prior Firewire technology and provides complete specifications for speeds of 1.6 Gigabits/second and 3.2 Gigabits/second, which TG Daily notes utilizes the existing 9 pin cables of Firewire 800.
As someone who has a lot of Firewire 400/800 devices, finally seeing some serious throughput speed plus backwards compatibility this year is a huge bonus. For most consumers (even audio and photography geeks) Firewire 800 is an excellent choice as far as balancing speed and budget- I use the G-Raid Pro to edit multi-cam DV shoots regularly- it gives me the redundancy I need to be safe while allowing for up to 8 cameras at once in Final Cut Pro. But when you start to graduate to Standard Def and High Def- 800mBps transfer speeds won’t cut it- so the boost in throughput speed is welcome. The next question is- Will the new Firewire standard be part of the update to the Mac Pro this quarter?
